Why should one consider Ancestral Lineage Healing?
Well, off the top of my head: it’s fun. But I’ll go on…
If you consider yourself a Spiritual Person, or On the Path, or if you identify as someone who has Done a lot of Work, and have daily direct ritual connection with the Hawthorn, Green Tara, Osiris, and the Moon, it’s entirely possible that you’ve yet to give attention to your own ancestors of bone and body. That’s okay, it’s fairly normal in Western culture to skip this part. And this lack of attention is imposing some limitations on What Is Possible. It’s unsafe to not do it. It’s unsafe to do it. Just like staying in the house vs going out. This is relational. There is nothing safe about relating— with the living or the dead. Relating is not something we can very successfully opt out of.
As the Ancestral Lineage Healing work unfolds, my clients have reported:
sharper intuition and discernment
stronger boundaries with the living and the dead
addressing intergenerational trauma and dysfunctional family patterns
feeling more connected to your identities and cultural heritage
experiencing more secure attachments
a wider capacity to be with uncertainty, grief, and loss
more clarity and blessings for stepping into your own power and destiny
a grounded sense of belonging, especially for those who feel like they don’t fit in
vivid intuitive guidance from your ancestors
renewed and vibrant relationship with the Earth and the web of life
greater synchronicity, blessing, and protection in your life
cleansing release of grief, shame, and fear
a new sense of self-acceptance and worth
support to shift addictive behaviors
Your ancestors want you to live out your destiny. They are going to bless all of your creations— children or creative projects or contributions to the world. Your legacy. This is true of all of your living family members as well. The powerful spirit of the Wolf that you connect with sometimes may not give a damn about your personal destiny, they likely have other priorities.
So much interference can be addressed at this level. The dead have a lot of impact on the living. Using an ancestral lens when we’re struggling can help us to recognize previously unconscious burdens. It can create space for, and facilitate, transformation of those influences. This can be anything from insomnia, anxiety, depression, addiction, attachment wounding, poor boundaries, even physical aliments.
I’m still finding again and again that this work is container for for having emotionally corrective experiences (a different kind of attachment) that may not be possible with other living humans.
When I began this work, I was suffering acutely from Eurocentric Human Supremacy which reinforces loneliness and isolation. “Only living humans matter.” That’s a devastating worldview and simply untrue. For me, this work obliterated any fallacy I once held that I am ever alone. It has lifted the narrow, suffocating weight off my shoulders of the disappointments I have experienced with living family members. This work has given me the gift of perspective and context to some of the ugliest things I have ever experienced. I feel like I actually belong to my lineages now. To a family. I am them, they are me, we are one.
This work always occurs in a very different formation than most “healing” modalities. It’s often the case with many forms of therapy that your progress is garnered through personal effort only. Well, this is ritual—not therapy— and personal effort has very little to do with the process. A “work ethic” applied to the sacred can interfere with ones ability to let the ancestral guides handle it. If they say, "Get involved," then you get involved. If they say, "Step back," you step back. This is all about right relationship with Trusted Powers and our ancestral elders. Another (often toxic) Western default is “it's got to be hard to be worthwhile.” It’s true that you might need to invest some courage. When we do this, we sacrifice some comfort because we are looking at something that we would otherwise avoid. A lot of people come to the work because they accurately assess there is tangible interference from the dead, so it's more comfortable to do the work than to keep avoiding it.
Ancestral Lineage Healing is also a really wonderful antidote to modernity. Ritual gets us out of our heads, into our bodies. Out of a cycle of consuming content and back to listening to our intuition. This is also cultural repair: Ancestral Lineage Healing addresses problematic systems with compassion and resource.
